#6: Becoming an Instagram Suggested User

Photo Mar 30

I’ll set the scene: I was at work, having just returned from a 5 day vacation from New York City. I stepped away from my desk for a brief second, but returned and looked at my phone. Two notifications popped up “@instagram follows you” and “@instagram sent you a message.”

My heart literally felt like it jumped out of my chest.

My heart rate increased and I recall starting to shake. I had a hunch on what this meant, but until I picked up my phone to open the message above, I didn’t think it was real. After telling a few coworkers, who had no idea what was happening, I instantly messaged my closest instagram friends — who helped me freak out accordingly. I was in shock.

Over a two week period in March and April, I was featured on @instagram’s suggested user list. How do you become a suggested user? A little bit of luck, but this post by instagram gives a little insight into what they’re looking for in selecting these chosen users. Why was I chosen? I have no idea, but I know I’ve been active in my local instagram community, I’ve participated in many instameets and Weekend Hashtag Projects, and I try to be active by being engaged on the app.

Instagram has provided me with so many opportunities — by being selected as a suggested user, I’ve tried to use this to showcase my passion for historic architecture and preservation. I look forward to continuing this into 2016!
